Saturday 9: It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over (1991)

Sat-9

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Lenny Kravitz sings about all the tears he's cried over this relationship. Scientists theorize that human tears fall into two categories: emotional and irritant. "Emotional tears" are most often shed over physical pain, empathy, compassion, depression, and anger/frustration. Think about the last time you cried. What triggered your tears? I recently re-watched a video tribute to Johnnie Walker who passed in 2018. I miss the big guy.

2) We also cry "irritant tears," which means we well up when a foreign particle gets in our eye. Over-the-counter drops can help. What's the last thing you bought at the drugstore? Was it a medication (OTC or prescription) or something else entirely? Prescription. Not insightful, but neither was the fucking question.

3) TV actresses have played a big part in Lenny Kravitz' life. His mother was Roxie Roker, who played the neighbor Helen on The Jeffersons. His wife (and the inspiration for this song) was Lisa Bonet, who played one of the daughters on The Cosby Show. Their daughter, Zoe Kravitz, appeared in the HBO series Big Little Lies. What TV series do you never tire of, and could watch again and again? At one time M*A*S*H, the NYPD Blue.

4) Thinking of Big Little Lies ... Zoe Kravitz co-starred with Nicole Kidman. Shortly after Kidman divorced Tom Cruise, she dated Lenny Kravitz. Have you ever been curious about a partner's past love? Sure. But never jealous of it.

5) Lenny Kravitz and Today Show weatherman Al Roker are second cousins (their grandfathers were brothers). Do you turn to a TV weatherman for the forecast? Or do you check a website or app? I google that shit. But here it's easy. 7 months sunny & 70, 5 months sunny & 100. No fucking snow.

6) Also a talented photographer, Lenny's work has been displayed at the Leica Gallery in Wetzlar, Germany. What's the most recent photo you took? I was at Senona and took pics with my family.

7) In 1991, when this song was popular, Murray Bicycles were the top seller among younger set. Popularity is fleeting, though. By 2004, the company filed for bankruptcy and no longer produces bicycles. Was your bike a big part of your summer when you were a kid? Fern Park. It was like a day camp. Baseball 8 AM-noon. Mom picked us up for lunch. 1PM pool at Fern Park. We played "Capture the Flag" & kickball afterward. Mom got us at 5. Dave Krum was the councilor. I am lucky now that we are friends on FB.

8) Also in 1991, Gene Roddenberry died. Mr. Roddenberry is best known as the creator of Star Trek. Who's your favorite Star Trek character? Beverly Crusher. Man did I find her hot. Still do. She appearered on "Picard" this season...

9) Random Question: How do you think your high school classmates remember you? As a very funny guy who painted WAY outside the prep schools' lines...

I hope you all are doing great! Life is great here!

Love,

B.

80s in November

Saturday 9: New Attitude (1984)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Patti Labelle sings that she feels good from her hat to her shoes. Do you often wear hats or caps? Only to a baseball game...

2) The lyrics tell us that Patti's worries are few. Is anything particular bothering you as you answer these questions? No, I'm good. I went to the singles' groups' Happy Hour. Nice folks. I'm meeting people, no "friends" yet...

4) In 2019, a street in Philadelphia was renamed "Patti LaBelle Way." At the ceremony, she was referred to as "The Godmother of Soul." Do you have godparents? If yes, tell us about them. If I did, I have no idea. I like the question. My brother and I know we had them, but no idea who they were...

5) Patti dropped out of high school during her senior year. When she was in her mid-30s, she went to night school and earned her diploma. Do you have any diplomas or certificates framed and displayed in your home or office? No. Not my style.

6) Patti was once engaged to Otis Williams, founder of the Motown super group The Temptations. Who is your favorite Motown recording artist? (Here is a list.) The Four Tops.

7) A diabetic herself, Patti has volunteered her time to organizations that fight the disease. Do you know anyone currently dealing with diabetes? Yes. She's doing very well.

Slaughterhouse Five

Saturday 9: W.O.L.D. (1973)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1)
This song tells the story of a man who has made a career in radio.  How many professions have you worked in? Five major ones, of which radio was one. Hotel, Furniture, Video and Liquor were the others with liquor longest after radio.

2) He describes himself as "45 going on 15." This morning, do you feel older or younger than your years? I spent last night on a first contact phone call. I forgot how bad they can be.

3) He estimates that he's traveled thousands of miles, from town to city, as disc jockey at various stations. Have you ever relocated for a job? Yes. I left Hartford for Boston in 1995 for a radio job at WBCN.

4) This song is written as though he's reached out to an ex. Is there someone from your past who is on your mind this morning? My past is always on my mind. It's unavoidable.

5) Tell us about a radio personality you grew up listening to. Joey Reynolds was primarily on WPOP in Hartford but was on WDRC as well. I met him when he did a guest show on my station 91Q.

6) This week's featured artist, Harry Chapin, was an Oscar nominee. Before he became a musician, he wrote and directed a documentary about boxing called Legendary Champions. When you sit down to watch a movie, would you prefer action, comedy, drama, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance, thriller or documentary? It depends on who I am with...

7) Today Harry Chapin is fondly remembered for his philanthropy. He filled his calendar with benefit concerts that supported local food banks all around the country. How would you like to be remembered? As a good brother/father/grandfather/friend.

8) In 1973, when this song was popular, one of the top-selling toys was a Curious George book packaged with a plush Curious George. Can you recall a favorite book from your childhood? I loved Animal Farm & 1984. And later Kurt Vonnegut

9) Random question: Here's $100. What will you spend it on? Dinner with a beautiful woman. Who I've yet to meet. But I'm working on it...
